Conceptualizing health and wellness: What is health and wellness?
The overall mental and physical health is what we call health. Whereas many people define health as a state of no illnesses or diseases, WHO disregards this by defining it as a state of complete physical, mental and social wellbeing and not merely the absence of a disease(WHO,1948).
Wellness is a state of being in an optimal mental and physical health. It is better described an active process of awareness and choices one’s health. Health largely depends on wellness because wellness is all about taking proactive steps through a life that is inclusive of physical responsibility. In other terms, the chances of illness are controlled by actions and conditions taken by an individual regarding the body.
These actions may include quitting smoking. Excessive tobacco causes lung problems; cancer. Other than smoking, alcohol also has adverse effects on health. The liver is likely to have problems which later results to liver cirrhosis.
Why is wellness important?
Wellness plays a vital role in a way that as one ages, the regular exercises and diet help in reducing or even preventing the risk of illnesses like obesity and heart diseases and many other illnesses.
Apart from that, wellness is freedom. The body freedom that enables one to have a high self esteem. With health eating and fitness, everything else is easy.
What are the dimensions of wellness?
There exists almost eight dimensions of wellness but the main are five.
a) Physical dimension.
Wellness and a healthy living has evolved to stand for many things other than being physically fit. But this particular dimension of wellness represents a sound substantial body that is maintained through proper nutrition, enough sleep, regular physical exercise, and abstaining from all bad habits like smoking and excessive consumption of alcohol.
b) Emotional dimension.
This is about a person’s attitude. A positive attitude is preferred. The ability to stay stress-free is a number one step to being healthy mentally. One should be able to speak out when he or she is not at ease. This is possible by having that one specific friend or friend who you can confide in.
c) Intellectual dimension.
The ability to get your mind continuously inspired and stimulated contributes to overall wellness and more so the mental wellness. The mind needs to be kept up-to-date. Exercising the mind is also a way of maintaining the mental health which in turn contributes to wellness. Using the available resources in expanding knowledge and skills arouses the mind which is so important.
d) Social dimension.
No one is an island. We all need someone around us at some point. Someone close to us no matter who we are in terms of personalities. One or two best friends contribute to being socially well. Go out once in a while and get involved like in parties, clubbing and other ways that involve being around people. This will help in freeing one’s mind.
e) Spiritual dimension.
A set of guiding principles, values and beliefs give one direction to a correct way of one’s life. This is inclusive of the hope, faith and commitment to these beliefs for the reason: provision of a sense of meaning and purpose. Being spiritually well creates harmony between what you internally belief and what you don’t.
Covid-19 versus Travel and Tourism Industry in Kenya
Tourism and travel industry in Kenya is the weakest when it comes to pandemics. It is easily swayed by occurrences like illnesses and diseases outbreaks.Whether epidemics or pandemics, there must be a greater impact on this industry.Kenya being a developing country whose economy is growing at a pace of a chameleon looks up on the travel and tourism sector to give solutions to issues like Joblessness by creating jobs that require minimum qualifications. Apart from that, the National government gets some-(as an understatement)of its revenue from this wide sector.
Having a look at Global travel, hospitality industry and tourism hands in hands with the hotel industry gives us a reason not to doubt that these are the pillars of the modern economy and the social system. Therefore; having considered them as pillars,we also realize that these sectors face the brutal side of this pandemic-The mighty Corona Virus. The UNWTO has already projected a 30% decline in international travel for the whole 2020 which is much higher in terms of decline as compared to what was recorded in the previous year-2019.
A further observation into this sector in this hard time shows that this sector has linkages within its industries;inter-industry linkages. These include the transport sector, accommodation suppliers, restaurants and hotels, travel agencies and attractions. This is to imply that there is inter dependency upon each other where failure of one industry results to almost direct negative effect on the other. For instance if Movement is banned(indefinitely),that's the transport sector; it implies that the travel agencies have been directly affected from this directive.
Another hit is on the MICE industry.Meetings,Incentive travel,Conferences and Exhibitions cannot take place with the presence of directives like social distance and stay at home.As much as everyone might want Business-as-usual, safety comes first.
The world has experienced other pandemics before and it has always conquered them, Covid-19 is also one of them and it will be in the past too. Although recovering the industry which is already sinking down the drain is heavy assignment after all this is over, a brighter side of it is, there is always the way forward like allowing guests to move the bookings to a further date,Collaborative strategies among the private and public sectors and many other ways.
